ABOUT THE LEAGUE
Why we play
'It's always a great day for hockey' - Mario Lemieux
The MHHL is the only public safety hockey league in the DC/MD region and the largest police/fire league on the US East Coast, not including the FDNY in house-league. What began in 2017 has now grown to 10 teams, with players from almost every public safety agency in the DC and Maryland region.
The league plays its regular season at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD every Friday between Labor Day and April, with the season wrapping up just around the annual DC Firefighters Tournament in the spring. Each year, the Heroes Cup Final between the two championship contenders offers fans the opportunity to see the league first hand and help raise funds for charity, as proceeds from the event are donated to different cause each year.
The league has flirted with the idea of a spring development season, and an outdoor 3 on 3 league with multiple tournaments, and charity events.
For those who play hockey, they understand. Giving up the game isn't an option. Hockey is a part of anyone who is fortunate enough to play it. This league offers the opportunity for players to either continue their hockey journey, or start playing for the first time. Skills in the MHHL range from Beginner all the way to A level.

THE LEAGUE HISTORY
'THE ORIGINAL FOUR' ERA
In January 2017, the league was formed. Originally, the league began as a way for The Gardens Ice House to sell un-used day time slots to the public safety clubs. 4 teams agreed to take a trial run at this new format. The Anne Arundel Pickheads, DCFD, DC Metro Police, and the Montgomery Fire Hooligans. The club's agreed to play 8 games, with a playoff. The first Heroes Cup Championship was won by the DCFD club. It would not be their last appearance in the final.
The following season, the league grew and added a 5th team, the Howard Heat. Howard had already been an established club, having played over 15 seasons as a group which worked out well for them, as they defeated the Anne Arundel Pickheads in the 2018 Heroes Cup Final, winning 5-4 in overtime.
'THE EXPANSION' ERA
2019 would begin a rapid expansion that would see the league double within 2 seasons. The first to be added was PGFD, another club with a long history.
In the playoffs in 2019, Howard would win it's second consecutive Heroes Cup, winning 7-6 over DCFD in a game where there was 4 lead changes between the two clubs. In 2019, the Royal Navy Hockey Club all the way from the UK came into town for a 4 game series between the league's clubs: Annapolis, Anne Arundel, DCFD, and Howard.
The following season, the expansion Maryland State Police Honeybadgers, who would get off to a fast 3-0 start certainly established them a competitive club, quickly. MSP would finish the season 7-9, coming 1 win from a .500 record.
In 2019-20, the league would see it's most competitive season yet with 6 out of the 7 clubs all maintaining a hold on first place for at least 3 weeks each. By the end of the season, DC Metro PD would secure the best overall record and set a single season record for wins with (14) and again go into the playoffs as the number 1 seed.
DC Police also would take the league on a Toy's for Tots campaign, the first one for the league with over $2000 in toys donated during the 2019 Holiday season.
Again, the Heroes Cup Final would be a rematch of the previous season between DCFD and Howard, going for the 3peat! DCFD would take back the cup, winning 2-0 in front of a sold out crowd at the Gardens Ice House. The Heroes Cup Final was the first significant event in league history, raising $2000 for a Howard County Firefighter battling cancer.
In what was suppose to be our best season yet, with more special events scheduled and 10 teams joining, sadly the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the league to postpone any plans until further notice.
As we return to a sense of normalcy, it's our hope to continue to be a positive impact on our public safety communities and promote competition and camaraderie among our heroes. STAY SAFE!
